Charles Byrd impressed on “Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series”, so he got a chance to show his mettle in the Octagon for real at UFC Fight Night 127.
Standing opposite from him for the “main event” of the prelims was John Phillips, the local talent with the knockout fists.
Too bad Phillips never got a chance to use them.
From the moment the bout began, Byrd was on Phillips like white on rice, taking him down and mounting him, and punching at every opening. Phillips tried to avoid the worst of it, and tried to get up, but that only enabled Byrd to take his back and threaten with a choke. The Brit got out of that one, but he wasn’t so lucky with the next one, and Byrd wound up with a submission win in his Octagon debut.
