A huge crowd assembled at the MGM Grand Garden Arena to view the weigh-ins for the Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao mega-fight in Las Vegas today, which saw both combatants make the contracted welterweight limit.

It was an atmosphere never before seen at today’s weigh-ins event — and for the first time in this observer’s memory, fans actually paid for the right to experience it.

But that’s par for the course, as HBO commentator Jim Lampley noted. Tomorrow’s broadcast appears to be headed to break every record available. Lampley described the projected revenue for the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao bout to exceed that of the GDP of 29 countries.

As for the fighters, they both looked excellent.  Mayweather, who weighed 146 lbs., appeared noticeably bigger than Pacquiao, who weighed in at 145, but then, we expected that. A stare down saw Manny smile and briefly nod, even saying “thank you” to his opponent.

There was no response from Mayweather, who simply stared forward, “all business.”

Crowd mostly supported Pacquaio. “The Lord is always with me,” the Filipino said in a brief interview. He added that the fight was something the fans, whether for or against him, deserved to see.
