It’s been a couple of weeks now since Bjorn Rebney revealed that Bellator probably won’t sign Ben Askren, if the welterweight champ receives a big offer from the UFC, and it still remains to be seen where the free agent is headed. Of course, not only did Rebney make headlines by saying they might not retain one of Bellator’s best fighters, but because the CEO conceded Askren’s wrestling based game isn’t a big draw.
Now, since then, Rebney has continued to insist that he’s a fan of Askren and that the undefeated fighter will likely cruise through the competition wherever he ends up going. Case in point, while speaking on AXS TV’s “Inside MMA” recently, here’s what the Bellator boss man had to say about Askren and his feared top game (comments via MMA Junkie.com):
“I’ve been a staunch supporter of Ben Askren,” Rebney said. “We can all agree: He’s ridiculously one-dimensional. But the issue with that one dimension is that he’s better at it than anyone on the face of the earth. He’s been dominant inside of our cage. He’s the best wrestler in MMA that we have in this sport. So look, if you don’t like wrestling and you don’t like what Ben does, then stop it. That’s why they call it a fight. Ben famously said up in Canada, ‘If you want to see two guys stand in the middle of the cage and hit each other in the face, there’s a sport called boxing.’ He’s executed beautifully.”
“We’ll see what happens with Ben,” he said. “I don’t know if Ben will be with us, I don’t know if Ben will be with the UFC. But wherever he goes, he will remain dominant and he will remain amazingly effective at the one thing he does better than anybody.”
While some UFC fans may not jump for joy if the promotion indeed locks up Askren, based off what he’s demonstrated thus far in the cage, he’ll be a ridiculously, competitive addition to its welterweight division. One would think we’ll know fairly soon where “Funky’s” next fight is going to take place.
