He was stripclub bouncer and bodyguard for a porn site, but Kevin Ferguson, a.k.a. Kimbo Slice, could throw hands and looked the part of “scary motherf*cker” perfectly, so of course he became a star. First there were his YouTube fights, which had him pounding out dudes in backyards. Then came his MMA career, which saw him rocket to superstardom with marquee bouts on CBS, then on TUF and the UFC, and most recently in Bellator. But yesterday, at 42-years old , Kimbo went to the hospital in dire straits, and now he’s gone.

The exact cause of death hasn’t yet been released. We do know that he failed a drug test for banned substances after his last fight, against Dada 5000 at Bellator 149 in February.

Even though he was under contract with another organization, the UFC released the following statement on Slice’s death:

UFC is saddened to learn of the passing of Kevin Ferguson, known to fans around the world as Kimbo Slice.

Slice will forever be a part of UFC history as a contestant on season 10 of The Ultimate Fighter in 2009, and for having fought twice inside the Octagon at The Ultimate Fighter Finale and UFC 113. He carried himself as a true professional during his time in our organization.

While he will never be forgotten for his fighting style and transcendent image, Slice will also be remembered for his warm personality and commitment to his family and friends.

UFC offers its sincere condolences to Slice’s family, friends and teammates at American Top Team.

The sport has lost an icon. Kimbo Slice will be sorely missed.
