After reports earlier this summer that Cheick Kongo had signed with Bellator jumped the start gun, the promotion has announced today that the UFC vet will fight in its upcoming heavyweight tournament. When and who the powerful veteran will face first was not disclosed.

So, what if anything, sealed Kongo’s deal with Bellator? According to statements the fighter made in the official announcement, his buddy “Rampage” Jackson as well as the promotion’s CEO Bjorn Rebney.

“After my contract was up in the UFC, I really wanted to take some time and reflect on everything,” Kongo said. “After talking to the people around me, especially someone like my longtime friend in Rampage, he told me how well Bellator has been treating him and what we can do with Bellator, and after getting to know Bjorn Rebney, it just seemed like the right fit for me. I know I have plenty of fight left in me, and my fight in October is the first step to getting that Bellator Heavyweight Title.”

“My fans mean the world to me, and I want to show them what I am capable of every time I go out and fight,” Kongo stated. “I always want to deliver a good show to whoever is watching, and that won’t change in Bellator.”

Well, if you’re Bellator, you have to be loving the positive PR, as the promotion was kind of short of it when it was still in a legal tussle with Eddie Alvarez. At any rate, it will be interesting to see how Kongo does in Bellator. Although the 38 year-old is coming off a KO loss to Roy Nelson, Kongo went 5-4-1 in his last 10 UFC bouts and is definitely someone fans will want to check out during the tourney.
