Bellator has confirmed the date of welterweight champion Ben Askren’s next fight, as the renowned wrestler will take on tourney winner Andrey Koreshkov on July 31st. Askren will be looking to build on the stoppage win he scored over Karl Amoussou in January, which extended his MMA record to 11-0.
So what does Askren think of Koreshkov? Who has demonstrated some pretty nasty stopping power during his time with Bellator? In a press release from the promotion Askren was quoted saying:
“I’m really looking forward to getting back into that cage and putting on a show,” Askren said. “I feel like I’ve continued to mature and get better in every one of my fights, and July 31st should be no different. I don’t think Andrey has any ability to stop my wrestling and ground attack, so this will be another successful title defense.”
Regardless of whether you’re a big fan of Askren’s approach to fighting, it’s pretty hard to argue with the assessment above. The 28 year-old champ is one of the toughest welterweights out there to beat.
The July 31st card will also feature Douglas Lima taking on Ben Saunders again to determine the latest welterweight tourney winner. You may recall that Lima stopped the UFC vet the first time they met at Bellator 57. In addition, Patricio “Pitbull” Freire will take on former TUF competitor Rob Emerson. Should be a good card.
