Fernando Gonzalez can’t make weight for sh*t and likes the reefer a little too much for athletic commissions to overlook, but in seven appearances in the Bellator cage he’s lost only once – a split decision to Michael Page – so the dude isn’t someone to ignore. Brennan Ward is an explosive striker who’s fought in Bellator fourteen times and come up short in five of them, but he fights like his life depends on it so everyone loves him.
The bout opens with Ward pursuing Gonzalez like he’s food, throwing heavy leather before changing levels and taking him down. Gonzales gets up, and tries to fire back, but Ward keeps up the intensity, alternating from boxing to wrestling and ultimately controlling where the fight goes.
Round 2 sees Gonzalez’s strikes find their mark a bit more, but that only seems to fuel Ward’s drive to eat him for lunch. He continues to punch the crap out of Gonzalez and take him down, and for his successes Ward likely takes the round.
Apparently something clicks inside Gonzalez’s head and he realizes Ward is going to want to keep taking him down, because when Ward ducks down and shoots early in Round 3, Gonzalez latches onto his neck with a guillotine. That’s all she wrote.
