Former Strikeforce and UFC star Josh Thomson stepped into the cage last night to face one of Bellator’s elite – after two successful outings against the organization’s less-than-elite – and things got ugly.

Patricky “Pitbull” Freire is pretty well-known for having some explosive power, but Thomson has always been the kind of fighter to weather any storm and outlast opponents. Apparently, the Brazilian’s power translated into a storm that was too much to bear.

After stunning Thomson in the first, Pitbull came out for Round 2 firing off accurate punches. The two accidentally heads, then Pitbull tagged him, forcing the American to change levels and shoot… which put him directly in the path of a killer uppercut. That’s all she wrote, both on the fight and on Thomson’s career, as he’s since announced his retirement.
