Quinton “Rampage” Jackson looked every bit of an old, worn shoe in his bout against Japanese Olympic judoka Satoshi Ishii at Bellator 157: “Dynamite 2” last night. Yet somehow the aged legend managed to fool two judges into thinking he’d done enough to merit a decision, so the old shoe is still kicking I guess.
Make no mistake about, Rampage was once great but against Ishii he looked like someone who did zero training and preparation. In Rounds 1 and 2, the judoka crowded him against the fence and tripped to the canvas, using textbook inner-reaps, trips and sweeps. Ishii didn’t do much while on top – he’s not much of a submission wizard or ground-and-pounder – but he was at least on top.
Round 3 saw Rampage get his foe down and go to work from within Ishii’s guard. Yes, he scored, but though he took the round, the prior two frames had been lost.
Except two of the judges felt otherwise (one even gave Rampage all three rounds – WTF!), and the former PRIDE FC star and UFC champ got the split decision victory.
In his post-fight interview, Rampage promised his fans he’d train for the next one.
