The exodus of Will Brooks left Bellator without a lightweight champ, so tonight’s Bellator 157: “Dynamite 2” pitted top dogs Michael Chandler and Patricky “Pitbull” Friere against each other for the crown.

Given that Chandler had beaten the Brazilian via decision about five years ago at Bellator 44, and both men had gone on to have success in the cage since, it was expected that there’d be a pretty decent scrap for our consumption.

Chandler had other ideas, though.

The former collegiate wrestler shot for only one takedown, which Pitbull easily stuffed. Meanwhile, the duo seemed content to circle each other and fire off probing kicks and punches. Then came Chandler’s picture-perfect right cross, which saw him stepping in and tagging his foe square on the chin.

Pitbull was out like a light and left stiff on the canvas. And once again, Chandler wears Bellator gold.

Result: Michael Chandler def. Patricky Friere via KO (Punch) at 2:14, R1
