Bellator had a new middleweight champion following the Bellator 144 event in Uncasville, CT.

And it wasn’t who the world expected.

Rafael Carvalho won the promotion’s vacant middleweight title Friday night at Bellator 144 in spectacular fashion — scoring a brutal TKO win with a left round kick to the body.

The Brazilian, who was as much as an eight-to-one underdog in some online betting systems, not only scored the title in one of the promotion’s biggest upsets, but he may have offered connoisseurs of MMA legend Bas Rutten’s patented technique, the liver shot, a new favorite highlight.

In a post yesterday, our own Jim Genia showed the finishing blow, but Carvalho set the shot up with a hard knee to the body. Here’s a longer highlight video which shows both:

If you’re not familiar with the anatomy of a liver shot, there’s a great video from our friends at Damage Control MMA which maps it out with Dr. Mark Cacciamani, MD, offering the medical perspective.

MMA champions like Bas Rutten, and champion boxers like Micky Ward, made a career out of debilitating blows to the right side of the body with hard left hooks, and in the case of Rutten, left round kicks.

Here’s the how and why… but be warned, after watching this you may never look at a plate of liver and onions, or even a steak, the same way again:
