New York Assemblyman explains why he is against MMA (Video)

New York Assemblymen, Bob Reilly talks with Inside MMA on his stance against MMA in New York.

Reilly believes MMA perpetuates violence in our society, and unlike Football and every other sport [boxing], MMA’s goal is simply to ‘damage’ your opponent. He says its the ‘mixing’ of martial arts that makes it so dangerous.

Personally I believe laws should form off of facts and statistics rather than biased view spread by those in charge. Statistics show mixed martial arts to be one of the safest of the contact sports. Compare the average brain damage given to a retired boxer to a retired mixed martial artist. What do you think would be the outcome? When do you think New York will re-open its Madison Square Garden to the UFC?

Anybody who’s educated about MMA will understand that the main goal isn’t to simply hurt your opponent. If that was the case, there’d no rules whatsoever. Groin shots hurt like hell, (obviously) but they’re not allowed in MMA, head butts hurt, but they’re not allowed, strikes to the throat and spine hurt and can cause paralysis or death, but they’re not allowed. As far as the violence in MMA, it’s still safe. Some movies are violent, but they’re still safe. Instead of being biased Bob Reilly and whoever else is in charge of the decision to legalize or ban MMA need to educate themselves on the sport, before criticizing it.
