Yoel Romero earned the biggest win of his career last night at UFC Fight Night 70 in Hollywood, Florida — scoring a devastating third round TKO over Lyoto Machida in the evening’s main event.
Romero also took home an extra $50,000; netting a post-fight bonus from the UFC. (And, he wasn’t far from home, either. The Cuban-born Romero, who represented his country as a wrestler prior to defecting, fights out of Coconut Creek, Florida.)
The “Performance of the Night” award marks the fourth time Romero has been awarded one of the UFC’s traditional post-fight bonuses. Most recently, he was awarded “Fight of the Night” for his third round TKO of Tim Kennedy. He has now won each of his six UFC bouts.
The other three fighters to be awarded bonuses after last night’s event were Thiago Santos, Santiago Ponzinibbio, and Lorenz Larkin.
Santos also received “Performance of the Night” — by scoring the evening’s fastest, and most spectacular, knockout. The Brazilian blasted Canada’s Steve Bosse with a head kick at 0:29 of the first round of their middleweight bout; earning his first ever post-fight bonus.
Finally, welterweights Ponzinibbio and Larkin earned “Fight of the Night” honors for their bout, a wild brawl which saw Larkin eventually score a second round TKO. The award was the first ever for Argentina’s Ponzinibbio, and the second for Larkin, who hails from Riverside, CA.
