It looks like Team Penn will have one of MMA’s top coaches helping the squad out during the upcoming season of TUF, as according to a report from Globo.com’s Combate, Nova Uniao’s Andre Pederneiras will help guide team. Not only that, but Pederneiras has apparently extended an invitation to BJ Penn to come train with Nova Uniao when he’s training for Edgar-Penn III. Considering the Rio de Janeiro team includes UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo, interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao and a host of other top tier fighters, that sounds like a solid plan.
Pederneiras, who awarded Penn his BJJ Black Belt, had this to say about being asked to help out on TUF 19 (comment via MMA Fighting.com):
“It was a honor to receive this invitation,” Pederneiras said. “B.J. and his brother are really close. He is really excited and motivated with his fight against Edgar. It’s going to be a great opportunity for me to show my work as a coach to the audience outside of Brazil, which is not used to see my work closely.”
The Nova Uniao trainer also believes Penn should come to Rio de Janeiro and prepare for Edgar with the world renowned team. After all, the squad and Aldo are more than familiar with Edgar, as the champ defeated him this past February.
“We’ve studied Edgar’s game a lot for Aldo’s fight,” he said, “so I believe there’s no better place and sparrings better for B.J. to come back in great fashion and motivated.”
It’s hard to argue with that. Filming for TUF 19 will begin in the coming weeks and the show will premiere next April. Edgar-Penn III is expected to take place sometime next summer.
