Tonight at UFC 167, Rory “Ares” Macdonald will face-off with “Ruthless” Robbie Lawler in a match-up of two of the most promising welterweight fighters in the UFC.
Ares is coming into this fight looking for respect. After a lackluster unanimous decision win over Jake Ellenberger at UFC on Fox “Johnson vs. Moraga” Macdonald is looking to prove that he possesses the tools to remain a member of the welterweight elite. Macdonald stuck to the game plan in his fight against Ellenberger and picked “the Juggernaut” apart with his jab in order to avoid Ellenberger’s monstrous power.
Stylistically, this is a very similar fight to the Ellenberger match-up. The MMA veteran Lawler has been savagely knocking people out since his debut in 2001 and has scored 18 knockouts in 21 career wins. Lawler is coming into this fight with a lot of momentum with knockout wins over former UFC welterweight title challenger Josh Koschek and former Strikeforce contender Bobby Voelker.
Macdonald will look to keep Lawler at the end of his jab. He cannot let Lawler close the distance because as history has proven, Lawler can end the night with one shot. Expect Macdonald to force the takedown and pound out Lawler from top position after dominating the stand-up portion of the fight.
My Prediction: Macdonald via Unanimous Decision
