White: “You’ve Got to Respect” Johnson

UFC on fox 8

Demetrious Johnson not only defended his flyweight championship at UFC on FOX 8 Saturday night, but the 26 year-old vet scored a submission win over John Moraga, to record his first stoppage in seven bouts. It was a big night for Johnson, as not only did he impress throughout the bout, but he was able to silence critics (for the time being) who say he can’t finish fights.

Speaking after the Seattle card, UFC President Dana White had this to say to FUEL TV about Johnson, and whether the champ’s pefrormance will muffle his detractors.

“I haven’t heard negative stuff about DJ. If you’re saying anything negative about him, you’re an idiot. He did everything to dominate a wrestler, a guy with knockout power. He was leading in the fight going into the fifth round and could have cruised, and he takes a chance and goes for an armbar with a dangerous guy. You’ve got to respect him.”

Johnson was also asked if he was hunting for a stoppage, considering the recent debate, as to whether he and his fellow flyweights finish enough fights.

“I don’t think when I go out there. I’m just going out to fight. I’m an artist and the Octagon is my canvas. I just went for the armbar and was waiting for it to pop, then the ref said it was over and he had tapped!”

If you’re keeping score, Johnson has now defeated the flyweight’s division’s #1,2,3 and 4 ranked flyweights in Joseph Benavidez, Ian McCall, John Dodson and Moraga. Impressive stuff.
