Cung Le fans have been waiting for a while now to see the highlight reel striker back in action, and it looks like it could be several more months before he’s booked to fight again. The reason being that UFC President Dana White has recently relayed that the 41 year-old middleweight is a top candidate to coach the upcoming TUF China show, which is expected to begin filming later this year.
According to a report from MMA Junkie.com, sources close to the situation have informed the outlet that Le will coach the reality show, and White also reportedly stated that there’s “a real good chance” the vet will be a coach. At this juncture, it hasn’t been announced yet if the coaches for TUF China will fight after the season concludes, as has been the custom with the program. In fact, as the report notes, there’s hasn’t been word yet if two coaches will even be selected, or if just one could oversee the season. Even if it were just Le, one would think the UFC would like to have him fight on the season finale.
Tryouts for TUF China are set to get underway this month in Beijing, Singapore and Macao, and they are open to featherweights, lightweights and welterweights.
Le (9-2) hasn’t competed now since last November, when he knocked out Rich Franklin in the first round at UFC on FUEL TV 6 in November. Prior to that the San Shou expert worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Patrick Cote at UFC 148. The former Strikeforce champ has been sidelined in recent months due to elbow surgery he underwent.
