UFC 155 was expected to produce a clear top contender between perennial contenders Chris Weidman and Tim Boetsch. Unfortunately an undisclosed injury suffered by Weidman will force the opponent change. Training partner of Weidmann, Costa Philippou has been announced as the new opponent for Boetsch. Philippou was originally scheduled to face Nick Ring at UFC 154, but the bout was called off the morning of the event, due to Ring being ill.
Philippou has also proved to be a contender in the division, as he carries four straight in the UFC with wins over Jorge Rivera, Jared Hamman (KO), TUF winner Court McGee, and Riki Fukuda at UFC 148 in July.
Though a valuable opponent for Boetsch to hold a victory over, there is yet to be verification that the bout would still be a contenders match – at least for Boetsch. With talks of a likely match between middleweight champ Anderson Silva and Georges St-Pierre in May, the contender may be a moot point until summer 2013.
