WEC 50 has just been officially announced according to an official press release. The event is headlined by a rematch between Joseph Benavidez and Dominick Cruz. The last fight between the two featured Cruz defeating Benavidez via decision in an exciting three round fight. The decision marked Benavidez’s first career loss.
Cruz is the reigning bantamweight champ, having won the title against Brian Bowles at WEC 47. Cruz overwhelmed the former champion in the bout, dictating the pace of the fight and pressing the action. As a result, Cruz won the title via doctor stoppage at the end of the second round, as the bloodied Bowles couldn’t continue due to a broken hand.
Benavidez is coming off an impressive submission win over longtime bantamweight juggernaut Miguel Torres at WEC 47. Benavidez thoroughly dominated Torres, and opened a large cut on his forehead before submitting the former champion via guillotine choke in the second round.
The WEC 50 card also features the bantamweight debut of mega-popular star Urijah Faber. Faber, a former featherweight champion, makes the move to bantamweight after losing his last three featherweight championship fights, the last being a five round battle against Jose Aldo.
Faber is set to face Japanese star Takeya Mizugaki, who is coming off a decision victory against Rani Yahya. Mizugaki comes into the fight with a 13-4-2 record.
WEC 50 is set to take place on August 18th, at The Pearl in Los Vegas, Nevada. The event is set to air live on Versus.
