UFC Fight Night 109 comes to us this Sunday from Sweden, and the co-main event has Misha Cirkunov taking on Volkan Oezdemir. Those names might not have a lot of cachet with the average MMA fan, but if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll know that Cirkunov is a big Russian dude with a jiu-jitsu black belt that’s enabled him go 4-0 in the Octagon – one of those wins was via knockout, the other three were by submission.
That’s noteworthy, especially in a light-heavyweight division that needs some clarity and fresh blood to make it interesting again.
On the flipside is Oezdemir, who made his UFC debut against Ovince St. Preux back in February and edged past him by split decision. Is he tough? Hell yeah. The only question mark is what kind of potential he may realize while on the roster.
