Dana White appeared on ESPN’s SportsCenter today to break the news that bantamweight champ Dominick Cruz is injured, stripped of the belt and off the UFC 169 card scheduled for February 1 in Newark, N.J. Taking Cruz’s place in what was to be a title unification bout against interim champ Renan Barao is longtime top contender Urijah Faber, who steps in on less than three weeks notice (and just three weeks over his submission win over Michael McDonald at UFC on FOX 9 on December 14).
This will be the second time Faber and Barao have met in the cage. The first was at UFC 149 on July 21, 2012, where Faber lost via unanimous decision. The bout crowned Barao as the interim 135-pound champ, and was made because Cruz was sidelined with a torn ACL.
