The hits keep coming for UFC on FOX 9, as the promotion has announced that Scott Jorgensen has decided to drop to flyweight, and will battle the division’s #3 ranked fighter Ian McCall at the event. That’s another solid addition for a card that already will feature Anthony Pettis-Josh Thomson, Urijah Faber-Michael McDonald, Nik Letz-Chad Mendes, and Joe Lauzon-Mac Danzig.
Jorgensen (14-7) is making the move to 125 after being submitted by perennial contender Urijah Faber at the TUF 13 Finale in April. Prior to the defeat, “Young Guns” tapped out John Albert with a first round, rear-naked-choke at UFC on FOX 5 in December. Although Jorgensen is 2-3 in his last 5 scraps, his other losses came against Eddie Wineland and interim bantamweight champ Renan Barao, so he’s been facing some top level competition. Jorgensen is ranked as the promotion’s #7 bantamweight.
McCall (12-4-1) recently returned to the winning column, as he worked his way to a unanimous decision win over Iliarde Santos at UFC 163 in August. “Uncle Creepy” had gone winless in his previous three bouts, which included a decision loss and draw versus flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson, as well as a UD defeat against Joseph Benavidez. So like Jorgensen, McCall has been consistently throwing down with the cream of the crop.
It’s going to be interesting to see how Jorgensen looks at 125. If he can beat McCall in his first flyweight outing, and that’s not an easy thing to do, the WEC vet could be poised to make a title run in 2014.
UFC on FOX 9 will be go down at Sacramento’s Sleep Train Arena. Stay tuned to Caged Insider.com for more on this story and all your UFC news.
