While much of the attention heading into tonight’s UFC Fight Night 28 card has focused on Ryan Bader and Glover Teixeira, since the latter could lock up a title shot at 205, the co-main-event has a ton riding on it as well. In fact, one could say that the vast majority of Okami’s fights the last few years have had big ranking’s implications, since “Thunder’s” been a top contender for so long. Of course, in the co-headliner, the #5 ranked middleweight “Jacare” Souza will look to defeat the #3 Okami, which would be a huge win for Souza considering it’s just his second UFC fight.
So, how does Souza plan on taking out Okami? Who despite being criticized in the past for his grinding and overpowering style, has at the end of the day, gone 14-3 in the UFC? While speaking to MMA Fighting.com recently, here’s what the former Strikeforce champ had to say about tonight’s bout.
“I‘m in phenomenal shape, feeling like a giant,” Souza said. “I’m absolutely positive that I will put on a great fight, and I’m ready for this challenge. I would love to submit him, but I’m focused on winning the bout.”
“I love to work on the clinch,” he said. “When someone tries to put me on the fence and work on the clinch, someone is going to get hurt, and it won’t be me.”
It’s going to be interesting to see how Okami approaches Souza, who is a ridiculously dangerous BJJ black belt who also holds the equivalent in Judo. So, as he noted above, Okami (who’s also a Judo black belt) may not have the same advantage he usually does in the clinch. We’ll find out in just a few hours.
UFC FN 28 will go down in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and will be broadcast throughout the U.S. on FOX Sports 1.
