What a night for UFC Flyweight Champion Demetrious Johnson!
The man known as “Mighty Mouse” needed just over two minutes to defend his belt tonight at UFC on Fox 9 in Sacramento, California — defeating the man he beat for the title, and making a little history in the process.
In defeating Joseph Benavidez by knockout with an overhand right at 2:08 of round one, Johnson scored the quickest knockout in UFC flyweight division history. Additionally, it was the first time Benavidez had been stopped in his MMA career.
The two had been bouncing in and out of range to begin the bout, with Benavidez taking center Octagon as Johnson circled. Johnson stepped forward, missing a jab but landing a huge overhand. Benavidez dropped to the mat, where Johnson continued raining down punches until the bout was stopped.
Johnson and Benavidez had met last year to establish the division’s first champion. That night, Johnson, of Parkland, Washington, earned a split decision. With this, his fourth straight victory, Johnson improves his record to 19-2-1 while Benavidez, who was fighting in his hometown of Sacramento, California, drops to 19-4.
