UFC on FOX 6 was recently announced to officially hold a lightweight number one contenders match between Anthony Pettis and Donald Cerrone, which we now know is a co-main event. Newly minted 125 pound champion Demetrious Johnson will defend his title against John Dodson come January 26th in the event headliner. The event will take place at the United Center in Chicago, Illinois. This matchup between the top flyweight is considered to be a match between the two fastest fighters that have ever entered the octagon. While the division may be light on contenders it is definitely not light on action as all four fighters are known to showcase.
Demetrious Johnson was always a top bantamweight in the WEC and UFC, but he was always considered to be slightly too small. With a loss to current champion Dominick Cruz it was likely going to be a while before ‘Mighty Mouse’ received a title shot again in the growing division. Luckily, the inaugural flyweight tournament was announced not much later from the loss. After having to fight Ian McCall twice to gain entry into the final, Johnson put on a masterful performance against Joseph Benavidez to become the first 125 title holder in the UFC. Now he attempts to defend it against an Ultimate Fighter winner.
John Dodson won the Ultimate Fighter at bantamweight, but he knew his true weight would always be at 125. He immediately dropped down, and he took two straight victories. His last win was a second round knockout over top flyweight Jussier Formiga. The impressive win earned him a shot at the title, giving the fans two exciting fighters enter the cage against one another. Bottom line… This card just got a lot more exciting.
