It must suck to be Raphael Assuncao.
For the longest while, he was considered to be one of the best in his division, but he was stuck on the sidelines with injury for so long that the sport went on without him (as it always does). Upon his somewhat heralded return, he lost a decision to TJ Dillashaw, who’d just been dethroned as champ and whom Assuncao had been previously. And now what? Did we miss out on the best years of Assuncao because of an ankle injury? Are we getting a mere shadow of his old self these days?
It’s hard to know the answers to these questions, but we’ll have a firmer grasp on where he stands when he faces Aljamain Sterling at Saturday’s UFC on FOX 23. Sterling – a rising star who got waylaid by a recent loss to Bryan Caraway – will be a tough test, and a great gauge of what the future holds for the Brazilian.
Here’s a little video the UFC put together on Assuncao’s behalf.
