Mexico is loving some UFC.
The UFC announced yesterday that the first ever UFC event in Mexico sold a very impressive 20,000 seats in less than 8 hours for UFC 180: Velasquez vs. Werdum, which takes place Saturday November 15th, 2014 at the Arena Ciudad de Mexico.
From UFC.com “Fans made history at the box office, as well as online, to sell out Mexico’s first ever live UFC®event. UFC 180: VELASQUEZ vs. WERDUM is the fastest sell-out in the history of the Arena Ciudad de Mexico and it will also set a new attendance record with over 20,000 fans attending the monumental event.”
The highly anticipated Mexico debut will be a homecoming of sorts for Cain. His father was born and raised in Mexico and Cain is ultra-proud of his Mexican Heritage.
It was announced back in August that the UFC would be making their first ever trip south of the US boarder and Velesquez said at the time he would be doing ‘whatever’ he could to get on the card. He of course, got his wish and now will have 20,000 boisterous fans in attendance come November 15.
Velasquez has been out of action for what seems like decades at this point (although his last fight was in October of 2013) and has been riddled with injuries throughout his short career. He had surgery in late 2013 and at the time was facing a long road to recovery. He has finally recovered and should be ready for his return at UFC 180.
Werdum has been patiently waiting for Velasquez but did fight as recently as April 2014 where he outpointed Travis Browne at UFC on Fox 11. Werdum has won his last 4 fights inside the cage.
