The UFC held the official weigh-ins this afternoon in Barueri, Brazil, in advance of the latest Fight Night card tomorrow night, and headliners Demian Maia and Jake Shields both made weight.
The former Strikeforce champ Shields came in at 171 pound for the five round tilt, while the jiu-jitsu star Maia also tipped the scales at 171.
Shields will be looking to build on the split decision win he scored over former Strikeforce contender Tyron Woodley at UFC 161 in June, while Maia is riding a three fight win streak, and is currently ranked #4 in the promotion’s welterweight division.
The only man who didn’t make weight was light-heavyweight Thiago Silva, who weighed in at 208 pounds. Matt Hamill, who Silva’s scheduled to battle Wednesday, came in at 205. Silva has been given one hour to lose the extra weight.
Today’s festivities were incident free, although Rousimar Palhares appeared somewhat emotional and or upset before weighing in. Perhaps “Toquinho”was worried about whether he was going to make weight for his welterweight debut, but the extremely stocky fighter came in at 171.
