Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza buzzed the MMA world Wednesday night by putting away Yushin Okami in under three minutes, but the renowned middleweight didn’t emerge from the bout unscathed.
According to the Brazilian MMA Athletic Commission (CABMMA), Souza broke his right foot during his scrap with the perennial contender, and has received a medical suspension as a result. The jiu-jitsu star is suspended for 180 days, however, Souza could compete sooner provided he’s cleared to fight by a doctor. According to a report from MMA Fighting.com, “Jacare’s” manager has already relayed that the injury is not as severe as initially reported.
Jussier “Formiga” also broke his foot according to CABMMA, and has been given the same medical suspension as Souza. The flyweight was stopped by Joseph Benavidez in the first round at UFC FN 28.
Another fighter from the September 4th card who picked up a lengthy medical suspension is Kevin Souza. The featherweight broke his right hand during his split decision win over Felipe Arantes, and has also been suspended for 180 days (he also can fighter sooner provided a doctor clears him to compete).
UFC FN 28 went down in Belo Horizonte, Brazil and featured Glover Teixeira stopping Ryan Bader in the main event.
