UFC Fight Night Manila Results & Play-by-Play

Good morning, fight fans! (In North America at least…!)

The UFC makes it first visit to the Philippines today — a country with a rapidly growing MMA fan base which promises to deliver a raucous crowd.

The main event is a very solid fight — with former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar and WEC featherweight champion Urijah Faber meeting at featherweight.

Backing that up is a pairing of two top ten middleweights in Gegard Mousasi and Costas Philippou, and the final bout for Filipino-American middleweight Mark Muñoz.

We will have coverage of the main card, as well as results for the preliminary bouts. Please join us and hit refresh for the latest update!

Main Card (Fox Sports 1):

Featherweights: Mark Eddiva vs. Levan Makashvili

Round One: Big cheer for Baguio City native Eddiva, but we have a slow start. Eddiva finally shoots. Makashvili sprawls, backs him to the cage and gets his own takedown. Back up, they press to the cage again, and the ref breaks ‘em up. Nice high kick from Eddiva, good rights from Makashivli are carrying the exchanges though. Late Makashvili takedown. 10-9, Makashvili.

Round Two: They circle, clinch to nowhere, Eddiva lands some light kicks and punches from range. Just not the fight were were hoping for. Makashvili with a takedown. Eddiva back up, lands a 1-2. I can’t score this for either guy, so 10-10.

Round Three: Makashvili with a quick takedown. Eddiva back up, but Makashvili with another, and Eddiva up again. Makashvili with a stronger takedown, gets to side control briefly, but Eddiva keeps springing back up. Good defense from Eddiva but he’s just not getting enough strikes together in the standup exchanges. Makashivli controlling the action but that’s it. 10-9, Makashvili.

Levan Makashvili defeats Mark Eddiva by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 30-27).

Featherweights: Phillipe Nover vs. Yui Chul Nam

Round One: Both guys with 1-2’s, Nover shoots under a right hand nicely and gets a takedown. Nam fights to his feet, takes some knees to the legs, and slammed down again. Back up — and down. Some light ground-and-pound. Elbow from Nover, who clearly wins this round. 10-9, Nover.

Round Two: More of the same from Nover, with a pair of takedowns. Nover looks for the back but Nam slips away. Nover close with an armbar attempt! They scramble back up and Nover hits a knee in a brief standup exchange. Nover shoots in, backs Nam to the cage. Nam with a good takedown and lands some solid strikes in the guard — best of the fight. I think he did enough to even it up. 10-10.

Round Three: Nam with a quick takedown again. Nover looks to threaten with a guillotine but no dice. Nam moves to mount. Both guys tired though… Nover re-positions guard. Good right from Nam… Nam in half guard, looking for arm-triangle. Doesn’t quite get it. 10-9, Nam.

Phillipe Nover defeats Yui Chul Nam by split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).

Welterweights: Hyun Gyu Lim vs. Neil Magny

Round One: Lim backing Magny up with jabs and a solid right, looking for his flying knee. Big knee after a right hand lands from Lim, and cracks goes a 3-2 combo! Magny finally clinches him up. Takedown Magny, looks for back, but Lim back up, shakes him off, and gets in Magny’s guard. Magny sweeps off a triangle attempt nicely! Lim with an armbar, but Magny slips away, and passes to mount! Magny takes back and looks for the choke. Back up, Magny lands some hard combo’s. Great round!!! 10-9, Magny.

Round Two: Magny with a big takedown, passes right to mount. Great punches just pour on… and it’s stopped! Win #7 in a row for Magny.

Neil Magny defeats Hyun Gyu Lim by TKO (punches from back mount) at 1:24 of round two.

Middleweights: Mark Muñoz vs. Luke Barnatt

Round One: The long, lean Barnatt looking to use his reach — hits a jab and a knee. Muñoz with the shot and takedown. Barnatt scrambles up, right back down, up again against the cage. Overhand rights from Muñoz have the crowd in this. Quick takedown but Barnatt springs back to his feet. Big rights, and another takedown from Muñoz. Hammer-fists in guard from Muñoz. Barnatt on retreat but gets back to his feet. It’s a big round for Muñoz. 10-9, Muñoz.

Round Two: Nice right into an overhand after some tepid standup to begin the round. Barnatt pushes him off and gets to his feet. They press against the cage again, good knee to the body from Barnatt. Barnatt slips away from another several takedown attempts. Big Muñoz overhands are landing as the round comes to a close. 10-9, Muñoz.

Round Three: More of the same, with Muñoz threatening the right and takedowns, Barnatt on back heel. Barnatt lands a few nice elbows as they clinch against the cage but just can’t get on track. Big takedown followed by some strong ground-and-pound. Barnatt up but he’s bloodied. Crafty little roll into a takedown from Muñoz. Back up and more rights land. Big reception for the Fil-Am Muñoz. 10-9, Muñoz.

Mark Muñoz defeats Luke Barnatt by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 30-27)

Emotional speech from Muñoz who leaves his gloves in the cage. Great moment for one of the classiest in the game.

Middleweights: Gegard Mousasi vs. Costas Philippou

Round One: Slick takedown to begin from Mousasi, right into side control. Philippou gets half guard, but nice elbows land from Mousasi. Nice punches from Mousasi as he postures to his feet briefly. Mousasi grinding this one out and Philippou just hanging on. Mousasi tries an arm triangle but no dice. 10-9, Mousasi.

Round Two: A slow standup exchange begins the round, neither guys gets much in. Mousasi with a few leg kicks, one strays to groin area. On restart, Mousasi gets the takedown again, moves to side. Mousasi looking to isolate the arm. Mousasi to half, lands some light ground-and-pound. Not much to say here, just good top pressure and more of the same. 10-9, Mousasi.

Round Three: Jabs from Mousasi. Philippou returns, eats leg kicks though. Mousasi with the takedown. He’s mixing strikes to takedowns so well here. Philippou in guard, taking some light punches from Mousasi. That’s pretty much the story of the fight, and that’s where we stay as time expires. 10-9, Mousasi.

Gegard Mousasi defeats Costas Philippou by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Featherweights: Frankie Edgar vs. Urijah Faber

Round One: Faber opens with leg kicks, one may have hit the groin. Both guys darting in and out but nothing landing. Edgar shoots in and looks for Faber’s back against the cage. But that’s about it. Edgar using combination punching and Faber looking for one shot but both to little effect. Narrowly, 10-9, Faber.

Round Two: Edgar’s combinations getting closer now, and starting to land. Good left to body and right over the top from Faber. Leg kick from Edgar. Overhand from Faber. Everything is glancing, both guys bouncing in and out. This fight reminds me of Shinya Aoki talking about how he’s frustrated with the current “box-wrestle” scene — that was a good five years ago at least and it’s even more so now. 10-10.

Round Three: Both guys bouncing in and out with Edgar taking perhaps a slight edge. Every round very close and honestly a little frustrating to watch. Edgar shoots in, Faber up but right back down. Edgar looking for back. Back up, right back down. Edgar transitions beautifully to mount but Faber spins to his feet again. Faber threatens with a choke in a similar sequence. Back up, Faber back on his bicycle. 10-9, Edgar.

Round Four: More of the same, Edgar looking a little ahead in the punch range. Edgar misses a variety of kicks. Faber struggling standing, I wonder if there’s an injured hand? Nice shot from Edgar ends with an ankle pick. Faber right back up but down again, Edgar looking for back. A fe punches and Faber spins back up to his feet. Faber circling away and it feels like another Edgar round.

Round Five: Faber moving forward, but is jabbing the air. Edgar with a nice punching combo, then a takedown. Right back up and back down again. A few punches. Crowd calling for action as time expires. I expected more from this fight somehow but Faber has enough quickness and is slick enough to avoid any real trouble. But it’s Edgar’s round again.  10-9, Edgar.

Frankie Edgar defeats Urijah Faber by unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)
