UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva Results & Play-By-Play (All Fights)

Tonight, ZUFFA continues its torrid Spring schedule with UFC Fight Night from Cincinnati, Ohio, featuring Cincinnati’s own Matt “The Immortal” Brown taking on Erick Silva in a welterweight showdown.

Preliminary card (broadcast on UFC Fight Pass)

Welterweights: Albert Tumenov defeated Anthony Lapsley by KO (punches) at 3:56 of round one.
Lightweights: Justin Salas defeated Ben Wall by KO (punches) at 2:41 of round one.
Featherweights: Nik Lentz defeated Manvel Gamburyan by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27)

Bantamweights: Johnny Eduardo defeated Eddie Wineland by KO (punches) at 4:37 of round one.
Welterweights: Zak Cummings defeated Yan Cabral by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Flyweights: Kyoji Horiguchi defeated Darrell Montague by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28)
Middleweights: Ed Herman defeated Rafael “Sapo” Natal by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Main Card (to be broadcast on Fox Sports 1)

Flyweights: Chris Cariaso (125.5) vs. Louis Smolka (126)

Hawaii’s young gun Smolka is a -145 favorite.

Round One:
Southpaw Cariaso pushes the pace standing to begin with straight punching. Smolka clinches to look for a takedown and they press against the cage. The two exchange knees to legs and body. Smolka looking for a tai-otoshi throw but no dice. Halfway through the round and the crowd is restless. They disengage, Caraiso lands a 2-1 punching combo. Another straight left in an exchange. They clinch again, both looking for underhooks. Good body punching from Smolka in the clinch. Smolka tries a single leg but Cariaso attacks with guillotine. They tumble to the mat, then disengage at the bell. 10-9, Cariaso.

Round Two: Good straight lefts from Cariaso, who is negating Smolka’s reach advantage with superior movement and aggressiveness. Cariaso brings Smolka to the mat and gets back with hooks! Smolka slips away and ends up in Cariaso’s guard. Cariaso attacks with triangle and armbar, but Smolka scrambles away. Cariaso presses Smolka against the cage in the scramble. Cariaso with another double leg takedown. Neither guy very active on top. Smolka does land a good right before Cariaso scrambles away. Great 1-2 from Cariaso. Body kick from Cariaso. Smolka with a takedown, and Cariaso scrambles up before attacking with a “ninja choke,” a guillotine variant. Bell sounds. 10-9, Cariaso.

Round Three: Cariaso continues to be the aggressor standing. Straight punches and round kicks to the body. Cariaso with a good straight right on an exchange, then a leg kick. Smolka looks for a takedown but Cariaso easily sprawls away. Smolka with a takedown, finally. Smolka avoids and upkick and surges forward nicely, right into mount!! Good punches but Cariaso bridges and scrambles to his feet. Good 3-2 and a right hook to the body by Cariaso. A heavy leg kick drops Smolka to the canvas. Good overhand right from Smolka. Great action here. 30 seconds left, Cariaso whips Smolka to the canvas but he bounces right back up. 10-9, Cariaso.

Chris Cariaso defeats Louis Smolka by split decision (29-28, 28-28, 29-29).

Heavyweights: Soa “Hulk” Palelei (263) vs. Ruan Potts (244)

Round One: Both guys bounce in and out until Palelei shoots a takedown off a Potts overhand. Potts rolls him off but Palelei gets back on top. Palelei in Potts’ guard. Palelei finally passes to mount, and a short left ends it!

Soa “Hulk” Palelei defeats Ruan Potts by KO (left hook) at 2:20 of round one.

Welterweights: Neil Magny (170.5) vs. Tim Means (170)

Round One: Southpaw Means lands a straight left and a front kick to the body. Magney bouncing around, looking for his jab. He’s got a big reach advantage. Means moving forward, but neither guy landing much. In clinch, Means tries an inside trip, but Magney avoids it. Magney with a solid elbow. Magney tries a double but is shrugged off. Body lock into a takedown from Magney. Means gets wrist control and spins out to his feet. Magney with a front kick and a jab. Big left hook drops Means! Means recovers to his feet, looks for elbows in the clinch. Time expires. 10-9, Magney.

Round Two: Magney avoiding Means’ advances now and landing a jab here and there. Crowd is a little restless. Good elbow shot by Means. Means misses a high kick. Straight right from Magney. He’s glancing here and there, but that’s it. Means catches a kick and brings Magney to the mat. Means looking for the back. Means with knees to the body as they get to their feet. Magney basically gets in a three-point stance to avoid being kneed in the head. Side kick to the body from Means. Double leg from Magney, lands some punches as Means tries to scramble. Back up, Magney looking for a Thai clinch but no luck. 10-9 Magney.

Round Three: Magney loses his footing on a leg kick but Means can’t capitalize… kind of feels like this fight in a nutshell. Crowd booing the lackluster action. They clinch to the fence — and a big knee to the body from Means! Magney goes back into that goofy three point stance again. Means looking for a guillotine variant but no luck. Magney forces him to the fence looking for the double leg takedown. He finally gets it, right into side control. They scramble back up, and back down courtesy of a body lock takedown from Magney. Magney with mount, then back mount! Magney looking for the body triangle. Little punches from Magney. Means escapes to establish half guard. Elbow to the body from Magney. Time’s up. 10-9, Magney.

Neil Magney defeats Tim Means by unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 30-27).

Lightweights: Erik Koch (155) vs. Daron Cruickshank (156)

Round One: Cruickshank with a good right hand to begin. Cruickshank with a spinning back kick. Koch stalking out of his southpaw stance, looking for leg kicks. Cruickshank keeps spinning for his kicks, lands a big round kick to the head! Elbows to the head from Cruickshank end it from half guard!!!

Daron Cruickshank defeats Erik Koch by TKO (kick, followed by elbows) at 3:21 of round one.

Middleweights: Costas Philippou (185) vs. Lorenz Larkin (185.5)

Round One: Big left hooks from Philippou score, head and body. Larkin looking to get outside for his kicks. They clinch, Philippou stomping at Larkin’s feet. They disengage, big uppercut to the chin from Larkin. Round kick to the body from Larkin. Heavy leg kick from Philippou. Both guys missing straight punching. A big uppercut from Larkin lands after a Philippou right. Huge 3-2 combo lands for Philippou! Larkin falls unconscious to the mat in another upset.

At UFC Fight Night: Brown vs. Silva, Costa Philippou defeats Lorenz Larkin by knockout (punches) at 3:47 of round one.

Welterweights: Matt Brown (170.5) vs. Erick Silva (170.5)

Round One: Brown reverses a Silva takedown. Big body kick from Silva. Brown backpedaling, Another big body kick and Brown is down! Silva looking for the finish with punches but Brown rolls away. Silva pounces for back control with hooks. Silva looking for the rear choke. Brown surviving, but that’s it. Silva with body triangle, trapping Brown’s arm briefly. Brown finally escapes to his feet. Knees to the body from Brown. Elbow from Brown. Big right from Brown and now Silva is wobbled! Elbows and punches from Brown as Silva is on the retreat! Left hook and foot sweep from Brown and Silva down! Brutal elbows from the clinch from Brown! Kick to the body. Big left hook from Brown. Head and body punches from Brown. Double leg and more punches from Brown as time expires. What a round! 10-9 Brown.

Round Two: Brown with a series of punches has Silva backpedaling. Silva hits that round kick to the body again. Big left hook to the body from Brown. Elbows to the face as Silva backs to the cage. Uppercuts from Brown. Big right-left combo from Brown. Knees to the head from Brown. Silva backs away and hits that body kick again, hurting Brown again. Double leg from Brown, right into side control. Brown with punches as he tries to apply a crucifix. Brown tries a reverse triangle. Silva escapes. Brown looks for a D’Arce choke. He moves into mount. Big punches from mount from Brown, teeing off. Brown rocks back for an armbar, but Silva escapes. Brown applies a triangle. Silva slips away. What a round! Brown trying to take the back as Silva takes top position. 10-9, Brown.

Round Three: More power punches from Brown, then knees to the head from the Thai clinch. Brown with another takedown into Silva’s guard. Big rights from Brown to Silva’s face. Elbows cut Silva open. Brown stands over Silva for more punches, and finally the bout is stopped. What a fight.
