“Smilin'” Sam Alvey was on a decent win streak in the UFC until he met Derek Brunson and Elias Theodorou, then he couldn’t smile anymore (because they had kicked his ass). But now, after a solid win at UFC Fight Night 91 against Eric Spicely, Alvey can grin and show those choppers.
From what we’ve seen thus far, getting Alvey to throw anything other than the single knockout punch that ends his opponent is a difficult thing. And that cost him against Theodorou, who racked up points in their meeting simply because Alvey waited three rounds before he mounted any offense. Not so tonight, though. Tonight, Alvey started off banging with his foe in the first – and even managed to wobble him and clip him with an elbow.
But the bout-ender came old-school UFC style, for when Spicely ducked his head to go for a takedown, Smilin’ Sam cinched on the standing guillotine.
Hooray for the ginger!
