Welcome to CagedInsider’s coverage of International Fight Week, which tonight brings us UFC Fight Night 90. At the top of the card, champ Rafael dos Anjos defends against former Bellator champ Eddie Alvarez, but first up on this Fight Pass card is a welterweight pairing between TUF vets Vicente Luque and Alvaro Herrera.
The story behind Luque is some solid, well-rounded skills in all ranges, while Herrera packs some heavy leather in his punch. In the opening minutes, this translates into Luque throwing kicks and mixing in a couple takedowns, and Herrera cracking him nicely. But midway through the round Luque secures top position and begins pounding away, and it takes some work for him to get back to his feet – clearly, Luque is the boss on the ground. The horn sounds with Herrera trying to survive on the bottom.
Herrera is spent when Round 2 commences, so he’s a stationary target for his opponent’s strikes and takedowns. After about a minute, Luque is again on top, and his methodical game has him scoring points while Herrera moves like a sloth trying to get up. Sadly – or mercifully – Herrera has zero gas in his tank when Luque slaps on the D’Arce choke, and the tap out comes soon after.
Result: Vicente Luque def. Alvaro Herrera via Submission (D’Arce choke) at 3:52, R2
