Welcome to CagedInsider’s liveblog coverage of UFC Fight Night 87, which takes place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, but more importantly IS ON MOTHER’S DAY.
First up on the Fight Pass prelims as a flyweight contest between Japan’s Ulka Sasaki and the American Willie Gates.
Sasaki is all about the stifling grappling, which is wastes no time implementing early in the first round by taking Gates down and trying to work his top game. Gates ain’t having none of it though, and after sacrificing his back to get back to his feet, starts using wrestling to keep the bout upright. The American lands a solid uppercut and a jumping knee that has Sasaki backpedaling – which likely gives him the round.
The Japanese fighter scores a takedown within 30 seconds of Round 2, and another about two minutes into the frame, and while Gates is trying hard to get back to his feet where he’ll undoubtedly sprawl and brawl, Sasaki says “No way” slips in both hooks and secures rear mount. The chock can be seen coming a mile away, but Gates’ mistakes in defending (lifting up his chin, not fighting the grip) have Sasaki getting the tap.
Result: Ulka Sasaki def. Willie Gates via Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 3:30, R2
