The UFC Fight Night 87 main card kicks off with the ladies, and the bout sees Heather Jo Clark returning after over a year off (due to ACL injury) to face striker Karolina Kowalkiewicz.
It’s hard to tell if ring rust is making things rough for Clark, or if Kowalkiewicz is just that much of a badass, but either way, Clark comes out landing an overhand but ends up eating elbows in the clinch, one-two combos when there’s space, and a sweet spinning back-kick. More than a few times Clark tries to add grappling to this MMA bout, but Kowalkiewicz is mostly adept at keeping things upright and punishing her.
Kowalkiewicz remains fearless when it comes to standing in the pocket and banging it out, and in the seconds she really starts marking her opponent’s face up. Every clinch initiated by the American results in her eating knees and elbows like crazy, and soon Kowalkiewicz is chasing her down with punches. Clark falls back to guard and tries to sweep in the finals seconds of the round, and she ends up fighting off an armbar at the bell.
Round 3 sees Clark absorb punches like crazy, losing every exchange and shifting to feeble takedown attempts whenever she is on the verge of going out. That’s how the whole round goes, and when time expires it’s a no-brainer as to who deserves the win.
Result: Karolina Kowalkiewicz def. Heather Jo Clark via Unanimous Decision
