Welcome to CagedInsider’s liveblog of UFC Fight Night 83, which will feature Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone versus Alex “Cowboy” Oliveira in the main event – that probably more cowboys than Pittsburgh, P.A., has ever seen.
First bout of the evening is a Fight Pass prelim matching heavyweights Shamil Abdurakhimov against Anthony Hamilton.
Since Hamilton’s bread and butter is wrestling, he comes out looking to latch on and drag his foe to the canvas. Obviously, Abdurakhimov is having none of that, and whenever Hamilton gets close he peppers him with knees, hooks and uppercuts while circling out. Hamilton is successful in getting the clinch for about only a minute, but it’s near the end of the round, and he’s huffing and puffing way too much to do anything with it.
Round 2 sees Hamilton try to throw more leather. Unfortunately for him, every punch he throws is met with two or throw counters. They take a toll, and once again, when Hamilton secures the tie-up, he’s got no gas in the tank to turn it into a takedown.
Hamilton’s best blow of the fight comes in the third round, when an accidental clash of heads opens up a cut on Abdurakhimov’s forehead. It stops bleeding on its own, and the Dagestani fighter continues with his short punches and uppercuts, and even adds a spinning back-kick and spinning backfist into the mix. When time runs out, it’s clear who deserves the unanimous decision.
Result: Shamil Abdurakhimov def. Anthony Hamilton via Unanimous Decision
