Ben Rothwell has been in the game since 2001, and like most bears when you refuse to let them hibernate for the winter, he’s gotten angrier and angrier. It shows in his fights. In his last three trips to the Octagon, Rothwell has put away Matt Mitrione, Alistair Overeem and Brandon Vera – and he doesn’t seem to be getting any nicer for having won those fights.
On October 24, at UFC Fight Night 76 in Dublin, Ireland, Rothwell will be tucked into the co-main event slot opposite Stipe Miocic. It’s a somewhat important fight. Given that heavyweight champ Fabricio Werdum and former champ Cain Velasquez have the belt sewn up for a while, a worthy challenger needs to be sorted out. In a division that’s proven timeless and unaffected by a fighter’s age, that could conceivably be Rothwell. Or the young buck Miocic. Really, it all depends on how either man looks in Dublin.
Here’s Rothwell in action against Brendan Schaub.
Yes, he’s a hair bear of a man who probably goes crazy over honey and raids hapless campers’ picnic baskets, but he sure does fight well.
