UFC Fight Night 117: Diachi Abe Is Out-Boxed But Not Out-Punched

Welcome to CagedInsider’s coverage of UFC Fight Night 117, and event that took place in Japan and was to feature an aged ‘Shogun’ Rua versus Ovince St. Preux, but wind up being headlined by Yushin Okami against OSP instead because Shogun is too old.

The first bout saw a struggling Hyun Gyu Lim take on Diachi Abe.

Lim has always displayed solid skills, and this bout was no different, with his ability to gauge range and put together counters making life miserable for Abe. Abe tried his best with kicks and counters, but by the end of Round 1, he was getting marked up. This continued on in similar fashion in Round 2, with Lim blasting away with a jab-cross combo. Things weren’t looking good for Abe… until he dropped his opponent with a counter at the end of the round. The final frame played out like the previous one, only this time, when Abe floored Lim, he took advantage of the change in latitude with some grappling. Despite having inferior boxing technique, Abe’s power won the day.

Results: Diachi Abe def. Hyun Gyu Lim via Unanimous Decision
