Rani Yahya was on the cusp of stardom back in the WEC, where his mastery of jiu-jitsu made him dangerous to everyone. But he never quite lived up to his potential, so the passing years have made him “that old jiu-jitsu guy.” Henry Briones washed out of TUF Latam 1, has gone 1-2 in the Octagon proper, but went the distance with now-champ Cody Garbrandt. Maybe that makes him a tough fighter…? I don’t know.
The first round opens with Yahya hunting for that takedown like his life depends on it (it does), and after getting Briones down once briefly, he manages to make it stick the second time around by pinning him with side-control. From there the Brazilian goes for a North/South choke, and when Briones muscles out of it, it’s kimura time. Briones taps, and boy oh boy is Team Mexico getting its ass kicked.
