Darrell Horcher stepped up on late notice to face Khabib Nurmagomedov, so of course his UFC debut that night ended with a loss. But the motorcycle accident and serious injuries he suffered soon after is what made his return to the Octagon questionable. Well, tonight he finally returns to take on Devin Powell, in a bout where both men still need to make a name for themselves at this level of competition.
Horcher takes the center of the cage and Powell pecks at him with kicks both high and low. None of those kicks get through Horcher’s defenses, and in no time he’s catching kicks and planting that left hand against the side of his opponent’s head. Powell changes things up and goes for a sweep, but Horcher keeps rolling and winds up on top. The two seem content to wail on each other while on the ground, although Horcher does go for a kimura at one point. The horn sounds with Horcher on top.
The second round sees them go back to their striking routine, but this time Horcher mixes in an uppercut with his left hands, and Powell is suddenly bloody and in danger. Another punch puts Powell on his butt, and Horcher eases into his foe’s guard and half-guard to work some low-intensity ground and pound.
Powell keeps throwing those kicks in the third and Horcher keeps clocking him with that left, so Powell switches things up and starts going for every choke he knows. From a D’Arce to a guillotine to another guillotine, he’s really trying to get that finish, but Horcher remains calm until the final horn.
