The UFC needed strawweights for a season of TUF, so they raided Invicta FC and got – among others – Jessica Penne, who at the time was considered pretty highly ranked. But things haven’t gone so well since TUF, and now Penne is struggling (granted, she’s fought the best in Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Jessica Andrade, but whatever). So here comes Danielle Taylor, whose 1-1 in the Octagon but not really anyone to be feared!
Taylor comes out wanting to kickbox, and Penne obliges her, the two of them throwing kicks and punches like they get paid for each one. But in no time Taylor has found her range and rhythm, and she starts tagging Penne repeatedly, pushing her ahead on the scorecards.
Penne makes some adjustments in Round 2 and starts targeting Taylor with kicks to the body and drawing her out so she can counter-strike. It’s a game of inches, and it seems to favor Penne – for now.
It’s Taylor’s turn to make adjustments, and she does it in the third, ratcheting up her boxing to bring herself to close for Penne to effectively kick. For her part, Penne tries to mix in takedowns (all but one are stuffed) and knees, but she’s taken damage. The final horn sounds with Penne on top and looking to land a few more licks.
