It is ridiculously improbable that someone who fought at UFC 12 would still be fighting in the UFC, but here we are with Vitor Belfort headlining a UFC event in Brazil over 20 years later. But not even chemicals can stave off the effects of time forever, and when your opponent is young and spry like Kelvin Gastelum – who won a season of TUF and just ended Tim Kennedy’s career – you have to wonder if Belfort can still remain competitive.
From the outset, it’s clear he can’t. No longer as explosive as he used to be, Belfort is stuck eating jabs while looking for his opening. He does fire off with some fury, but Gastelum eats it and keeps coming, and eventually the American lands a punch that sends the Brazilian down. Gastelum follows him down and drops bombs, but Belfort survives and gets back up… only to get stunned and bombed yet again. This time there’s no getting up, and the ref has to jump in.
