Ovince St. Preux had some momentum going for a while, but then he lost to Jon Jones and get smoked by Jimi Manuwa, and now we’re left wondering if OSP can get back on track. Thankfully, he’s getting a relative nobody in Swiss fighter Volkan Oezdemir, so this could be his chance.
Oezdemir is a kickboxer with insane aggression, and he comes out chopping at OSP’s legs with kicks, firing off kicks at OSP’s head, and boxing the crap out of him. The American eats a lot of punishment – mostly due to his willingness to strike with the striker and forget his wrestling – but he doesn’t come close to getting knocked out, and he does inflict damage with his power, especially when those punches are blended with clinchwork.
Exhaustion – and probably a good bit of Octagon debut jitters – have completely sapped Oezdemir of his energy in Round 2, unfortunately, and given his ability to take a punch and OSP’s inability to throw a technical one, Rounds 2 and 3 look like two guys fighting underwater. The crowd is all boos, although when OSP starts swinging hard in the final 20 seconds of the third round, they come alive. Not a lot of fans are made with this fight, so whatever.
