It’s been a “Rocky Road to Dublin,” as song goes, for the Ultimate Fighting Championship.
Tomorrow’s UFC Fight Night 76, aka UFC Fight Night Dublin, has been deluged by injury cancellations — which nixed both the main and the co-main events.
But the show will go on, and today the promotion could celebrate a minor victory today — as all of the event’s scheduled fighters weighed in successfully.
Dublin’s own Paddy Holohan (pictured above) received one of the biggest ovations of the day. The Irishman will face Louis Smolka of Hawaii in a flyweight contest which was bumped to headliner after the two cancellations. Both fighters are 3-1 in the UFC and considered among the best in the division, if just out of the world’s top ten.
There was one skirmish at the weigh-ins, between lightweights Norman Parke and Reza Madidi.
In a bizarre scene, Parke threw a women’s handbag at his opponent after both weighed in successfully at the 155 pound limit. Madidi lunged at Parke, but the two were separated by UFC officials.
Madidi received prison time for his role in a burglary of a designer handbag store in 2013.
Parke, of Northern Ireland, is looking to snap a two fight losing streak in the UFC — both split decisions. Madidi, a Swede of Iranian origin, is 2-1 in the UFC.
