According to UFC President Dana White, the UFC has been eying an event in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Aloha Bowl sometime soon. The original plan was always to headline with Hawaii’s own BJ Penn. However, plans have changed, as Penn recently announced his retirement following a loss to Nick Diaz back in October. Penn still a top tier competitor, was thought to just be taking time off, in hopes of having a change of heart. When asked recently by the organization about his possible return, White revealed Penn was still relaxing away from the sport.
We’re still working on that, but we want to do it. I was kind of hoping to go to Hawaii again and do a B.J. (Penn) fight at the Aloha Bowl, but B.J. wants to take some time off. He’s going to relax for a while,” said White.
Should Penn truly be done with the sport, the organization plans to go on says White, admitting that it is not the way they would like to open up to the tranquil town of Honolulu.
We’re coming regardless,” said White. “But that was the fight I really wanted to do there.”
