The full PPV card for UFC 180 in November, which will mark the promotion’s first visit to Mexico, was announced today at a Las Vegas press event.
The 22 year old undefeated prospect Kelvin Gastelum will meet veteran Jake Ellenberger in a welterweight match. Ellenberger (29-8) seemed fast approaching a title shot earlier in his career, but now the former University of Nebraska wrestling standout looks to rebound after two straight losses. The 9-0 Gastelum is best known as the winner of The Ultimate Fighter season 17; like UFC 180 headliner Cain Velasquez, Gastelum is the son of Mexican immigrants to California.
Also announced: Diego Sanchez, another Mexican-American, will meet Norman Parke of Northern Ireland in a lightweight bout. Sanchez, now 25-7 following a controversial win over Ross Pearson (in his hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico), was the winner of The Ultimate Fighter season one. His opponent, relative newcomer Parke (20-2-1), has yet to lose in his five UFC bouts.
UFC 180 will take place at Arena Ciudad de Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico on November 15, 2014.
Headlining, of course, will be Cain Velasquez defending his UFC Heavyweight Championship against Fabricio Werdum. The two also are coaching teams for The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America, which debuted yesterday. Our preview for the show is here.
