Welcome to CagedInsider’s coverage of UFC 216, and event in complete and utter turmoil from day one. Abel Trujillo, Paige VanZant, and even Cain Velasquez was supposed to fight on the card at some point, but for whatever reasons things fell through, and leading up to fight time, Nik Lentz and Derrick Lewis both dropped out, thereby killing their bouts against Will Brooks and Fabricio Werdum, respectively. Even Kevin Lee’s interim title fight against Tony Ferguson was in jeopardy due to a nearly-flubbed weight cut.
Anyway, first up is former flyweight title contender John Moraga against Magomed Bibulatov.
The bout starts out like a Old West gunfight, with both men firing off kicks and punches while edging closer and closer. Bibulatov is landing, but it’s a right hand from Moraga that hits home the hardest, and when the Russian is wobbly, the American puts him out with a hook that has everything but mustard on it.
Results: John Moraga def. Magomed Bibulatov via KO (Punch) at 1:38, R1
