Welcome to CagedInsider’s coverage of UFC 215, a pay-per-event featuring flyweight champ Demetrious Johnson versus Ray Borg… oh, wait, that bout got scrapped. No, now the main event is Amanda Nunes versus Valentina Shevchenko. But don’t worry, I’m sure these two ladies will fight just as hard.
Anyway, first up is Kajan Johnson and Adriano Martins.
Martins is a Brazilian, a jiu-jitsu black belt with KO power, and a veteran of six UFC fights. Johnson washed out of an international season of TUF, but he’s gone 2-1 in the Octagon, so he’s not just some schlub.
Round 1 starts with both men content to dance in lieu of actually fight, although eventually they begin to commit to strikes that don’t even come close to landing. A left hand puts Johnson down, and the horn sounds with Martins on top.
They continue throwing strikes that don’t land in the second – are they that scared of each other? I don’t know, maybe they are. After much time has expired in the round, Johnson gets a little crazy and fires off spinning back-kick, and the two exchange punches, and then the horn sounds.
The third rounds opens with Martins charging forward and then simply face-planting. What the hell? Upon replay, it appears Johnson snuck in a right hand that landed squarely on the button.
