Going into this fight, the big question was if Frankie Edgar – the former champ with a million wars on his resume – would show any signs of slowing down. The answer: nope. Taking on rising up-and-comer Yair Rodriquez, “The Answer” had the answer… and it was something Rodriguez definitely didn’t want to learn.
All you need to know about this fight in terms of the action is “takedown, and ground and pound from above.” Because, yeah, that’s what Edgar did. Relentlessly. Nonstop. Over and over again. At first, Rodriguez tried to be mobile, firing out kicks with the hopes of catching Edgar and stunning him. But Edgar remains too wiley and too active a fighter for anyone but the most elite of the elite, so soon the Mexican was on his back, eating all sorts of elbows, forearms and fists.
Rodriguez got off a few kicks to Edgar’s legs, but the vast majority of the first and second rounds he spent on his back, and Edgar brutalized him so thoroughly that his eye swelled into a purple baseball. In between Rounds 2 and 3, the doctor examined it and said, “no mas.”
