Welcome to CagedInsider’s coverage of UFC 208, a pay-per-view broadcast out of the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY, and featuring as its main event the inaugural featherweight championship bout between Holly Holm and Germaine de Randamie.
First up, salty Brazilian dog Roan Carneiro against local hero Ryan LaFlare.
LaFlare stakes out the real estate in the center of the cage and opens up the action with a loud kick to the body. Carneiro fires back with some stalking boxing, and it becomes a tit-for-tat contest between the American’s kicks and the Brazilian’s right hand. After almost three minutes Carneiro goes for a takedown, only to have LaFlare reverse him on the way down and settle into his half-guard. Eventually LaFlare gets to his feet and steps away, and the horn sounds with them throwing too-thoughtful strikes.
Round 2 opens with LaFlare imposing his will with his kicks and probing punches, backing the Brazilian back against the cage. The fight goes to the canvas when Carneiro loses his footing and LaFlare pounces, but after about a minute of judicious ground and pound they scramble back up. With two minutes remaining LaFlare drops him with another left, and again takes top position, staying heavy in response to Carneiro’s tricky half-guard.
The final round has Carneiro throwing hard – likely knowing he’s behind on the scorecards – but LaFlare’s pursuit, and left hand and kicks to the body, have him backing up. All of his takedown attempts get stuffed, but when LaFlare goes for and fails a throw, it finally does go to the ground with Carneiro on top. Soon Carneiro gets mount, but there’s only a few seconds left, and the final horn sounds with LaFlare bummed time ran out with him in such a crappy position.
